Modelling of a 400m steam based Paraboloidal Dish concentrator for solar thermal power production

چکیده
The Australian National University has a 400m Paraboloidal dish solar concentrator system, informally named “the Big Dish” that produces superheated steam via a receiver mounted monotube boiler. The system, (shown in Figure 1) which is the worlds largest was constructed in 1994. This paper describes the results of the latest experimental tests plus associated system performance modelling. The system was modelled in the context of feasibility study and performance assessment for multiple dishes, central generation Rankine cycle power plants using the transient simulation package TRNSYS. The new custom components of the TRNSYS deck file constructed for this study are the Paraboloidal dish, the steam generating cavity receiver, steam line and steam engine. These component models are based on transient model using the energy balance equation and the empirical derived formulation. Validation test were performed by comparing with the latest experimental results measured with a 1-minute time step.

The Australian National University has re-engineered its Big Dish design for commercialisation and mass production [1], building the 'SG4' 500m Big Dish solar paraboloidal concentrator for solar-thermal to electric energy conversion using direct-steam generation. The SG4 Dish implements two-axis tracking and may be incorporated into a dish-array for large-scale power production. A program has b...
متن کاملTaking the ANU Big Dish to commercialization
The ANU 400m “Big Dish” is familiar to most people in the Renewable Energy Community. The first prototype was completed in 1994 and research and development aimed at supporting and improving the technology has continued within the ANU Solar Thermal Group since then. In 2005, Wizard Power Pty Ltd was established by a Canberra investor in order to take the Big Dish technology to commercial deploy...

The Australian National University (ANU) has worked for many years on paraboloidal dish solar concentrators and demonstrated a 400m system in 1994. The commercialization of this technology has involved a re-design of the Big Dish concept for mass production. The new design is a 494 m2 concentrator with 13.4 m focal length and altitude-azimuth tracking. It uses 380 identical spherical 1.17m × 1....
